Every fall, a special window opens—a chance for people from around the world to enter the U.S. Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery. If you've ever dreamed of obtaining permanent residency in the U.S. through a randomized opportunity, October 2025 is one of those moments.

At World One Law Group, we're passionate about demystifying the U.S. immigration landscape and helping you seize opportunities that truly matter. Below is what you should know about the DV-2027 lottery (the entry period opening in October 2025).

What Is the Diversity Visa Lottery?

The Diversity Visa program — run annually by the U.S. Department of State — allocates up to 55,000 immigrant visas each year to applicants from countries with historically low rates of U.S. immigration.

Rather than relying on employer sponsorship or family ties alone, the DV Lottery gives qualified individuals around the world a fair, randomized route toward permanent residency.

But remember: being selected is only the first step. You must still satisfy all eligibility requirements and pass the visa process to become a lawful permanent resident.

Important Dates & Timing — Mark Your Calendar

The entry period is expected to open in October 2025 and close in early November 2025.

After entries close, the Department of State conducts a random selection and notifies selectees in May 2026.

Selected applicants can then begin the visa process during Fiscal Year 2027 (October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027).

You'll check your results using the Entrant Status Check portal on travel.state.gov.

What's New This Year: The $1 Registration Fee

For the first time ever, the U.S. Department of State is introducing a $1 electronic registration fee for each DV Lottery entry.

The rule was published in the Federal Register and takes effect September 16, 2025.

The $1 fee is nonrefundable, even if your entry is not selected.

This new requirement is intended to prevent fraud, reduce duplicate entries, and modernize the digital registration system.

The standard $330 visa application fee still applies later, but only for those who are selected and proceed to the next stage.

Although it is a small amount, the $1 fee marks the first time the DV Lottery has required payment at registration. Be cautious of scammers charging more—official entries are accepted only through the U.S. government's secure website ending in “.gov.”

Are You Eligible?

To qualify, you must meet two main criteria:

 1. Country of Birth

You must be born in a country eligible for the program. If your country is ineligible, you may claim your spouse's or parent's country under certain conditions.

2. Education or Work Experience

    You must have either:

A high school education (or equivalent), or

Two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation requiring at least two years of training or experience.

Even if selected, all applicants must still pass background and admissibility checks before receiving a green card.

How to Apply (Step-by-Step)

  1. Wait for the official entry window (October 2025).

Submit only during the open registration period.

     2. Use the official website.

Complete the online entry form (DS-5501) at dvprogram.state.gov.

     3. Pay the $1 registration fee securely through the official site.

     4. Upload compliant photos.

Follow all technical requirements carefully—incorrect photos lead to disqualification.

     5. Save your confirmation number.

You'll need it to check results next May.

     6. Check your result through Entrant Status Check.

The U.S. government will not email you your result.

     7. If selected, submit Form DS-260 and attend your visa interview.

Be ready to provide documents proving eligibility.

Common Pitfalls

Fraudulent websites pretending to be the official site. Only apply through dvprogram.state.gov.

Duplicate entries are not allowed. One entry per person per year.

Incorrect information (misspellings, wrong birth dates, or mismatched family details) can cause disqualification.

Lost confirmation numbers — there's no recovery option, so keep it safe!

Why the DV Lottery Matters

For many, the Diversity Visa program offers one of the few ways to immigrate to the United States without employer or family sponsorship. It's designed to promote global diversity and give opportunities to people who might not otherwise qualify under existing categories.

At World One Law Group, we believe in helping individuals and families achieve their immigration goals with clarity and confidence. Whether you're a first-time applicant or you've entered before, our experienced team can help ensure your application meets all eligibility and documentation standards.
